A sorozatban a kórház orvosai és nővérei különleges esetekkel foglalkoznak, lélegzetelállító műtéteket végeznek és reménytelen helyzetekben reményt adnak. A sorozat központi alakja Dr. Alex Reid doktornő, akinek a vőlegénye, a kórház vezető sebésze Dr. Charlie Harris, egy autóbaleset következtében kómába kerül az osztályon, ahol mind a ketten dolgoznak. Miközben Alex megpróbál a betegein segíteni, abban reménykedik, hogy Charlie hamarosan magához tér.
