The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system reports that approximately 1 in every 31 hospitalized patients develop at least one hospital acquired infection (HAI). Deaths associated with these infections are estimated to be up to 99,000 per year. In 2015 alone, there was an estimated 687,000 HAIs linked to the acute care hospital setting.
