Hybrid 2025.11.09.1
With increasing awareness towards economic and environmental concerns associated with fuel combustion in automobiles, the world is focusing towards the development of sustainable technologies. The transportation sector is one of the highest consumers of fossil fuels and the largest contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Growth in on-road transportation is closely associated with the development of the global economy. Due to present worldwide trends in population increase, expansion in international trade and economic development, the demand for heavy and light duty vehicles is on the rise. The studies for hybrid electrical vehicle (HEV) have attracted considerable attention because of the necessity of developing alternative methods to generate energy for vehicles due to limited fuel based energy, global warming and exhaust emission limits in the last century. HEV incorporates internal composition engine, electric machines and power electronic equipment.
In this book, an overview of HEVs is presented. In fact, it aims to introduce the HEVs and present their history, advantages, disadvantages, classification, vehicle types, energy management strategies and some other related information. The book presents a focus on Hybrid Technology and also some brief introduction on it. It will also discuss the technologies used in the making of Hybrid Cars such as "Hybrid Solar Vehicle", "Hybrid Electric Vehicle" and "Plug In hybrid electric vehicles". Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have evolved from their inchoate state and are proving to be a promising solution to the serious existential problem posed to the planet earth. Not only do HEVs provide better fuel economy and lower emissions satisfying environmental legislations, but also they dampen the effect of rising fuel prices on consumers. HEVs combine the drive powers of an internal combustion engine and an electrical machine. The main components of HEVs are energy storage system, motor, bidirectional converter and maximum power point trackers (MPPT, in case of solar-powered HEVs). The performance of HEVs greatly depends on these components and its architecture.
This book presents an extensive review on essential components used in HEVs such as their architectures with advantages and disadvantages, choice of bidirectional converter to obtain high efficiency, combining ultracapacitor with battery to extend the battery life, traction motors' role and their suitability for a particular application.
