This is the only thorough biography of King written in the last three decades, and it was written by Eig. It is based on an avalanche of newly revealed White House telephone transcripts, F.B.I. papers, letters, oral histories, and other data, and it supplants David J. Garrow's 1986 biography "Bearing the Cross" as the authoritative life of King, as Garrow himself declared recently in The Spectator.
