The project began in 1996, or, as of this writing, around 25 years ago. It is a NASA project that has the help of the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency. The Project has received contributions from fifteen nations. Four major objectives drive the Project. These include looking for indications of life in distant planetary systems while studying the history of galaxies, the birth of stars and planetary systems, and the first stars and galaxies that emerged after the Big Bang.
